I wouldn't worry 'bout shifting at any certain rpm; as a general rule, I shift at lower rpms in lower gears, 'n as speed and rpm increase, so do shift points. Once rolling w/ the clutch out, I'd hit 2nd gear, 3-4,000 rpm, 3rd gear 'round 4, 4th gear 'round 5, and so on. Butt this would be on the flat lands in lower elevations, when in higher

We did the exact same thing in the late 90's. 400 SBC with a cast bottom end in an IMCA modified. We usually spun it to 6800 RPM. Here in Canada it was a $500 engine claim rule. That 400 was a great engine. It would come apart for freshening every 10-12 races or so. After that I got into sprint cars and engines got much more expensive.
Does anybody have any experience with riding with a passenger on your 400? Check the maximum weight in the owners manual or sticker on the swing arm, if it checks out you should be good to go, you will probably haveto shift at a higher rpm, i shift at 5,000 with my 200 lb carcass on the bike. O.
